About Garage Playbook
Garage Playbook helps homeowners plan, build and maintain better garages with research-based guides and free calculators.
Plan it. Build it. Love your garage. Garage Playbook helps homeowners plan, build and maintain better garages: doors and openers, floors, storage, heating and insulation, workshops, and projects and conversions.
Why Garage Playbook exists
Garage projects are full of expensive mistakes made in the wrong order: shelving installed before the floor is coated, heaters sized by guesswork, racks that hit the door, and openers installed on doors whose springs are worn out. Founder Jeremy Jarvis built Garage Playbook to put those projects in the right order, with clear measurements, honest trade-offs, safety guidance from official sources, and calculators that show their work.
What you will find here
- Six topic hubs: doors and openers, floors, storage and organization, heating, cooling and insulation, workshop and projects and conversions.
- Thirteen free tools: from the Garage Makeover Plan Builder to the Garage Heater Size Calculator. See them all on the tools page.
- Two free books: the Garage Makeover Planner and The Garage Upgrade Guide.
- In-depth guides: each one built from a research brief, with sources listed, a comparison table, a checklist and answers to common questions.
What we believe
- Safety first. We follow federal safety standards and agency guidance, and say clearly when a job belongs to a trained door technician or a licensed electrician.
- Measure before you buy. The right product is the one that fits your garage’s real dimensions and loads.
- Honesty over hype. We separate fact from opinion, cite sources and say what we have and have not tested.
- Helpful before commercial. Recommendations come from reader needs, never from commission rates.
How we research
Every guide starts with a research brief built from sources we can open and check: federal rules such as the garage door operator safety standard, agencies such as the EPA, ENERGY STAR, OSHA and the U.S. Fire Administration, standards bodies such as ASTM, and manufacturer documentation. Numbers in answers and tables must come from those sources or from a calculation we show. Our data sources policy explains the hierarchy.
How we make money
Garage Playbook is reader-supported through affiliate commissions. If you buy through some links we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Commissions never decide what we recommend or how a tool calculates. See our affiliate disclosure and advertising disclosure.
