Overhead Storage Clearance Calculator: Will a Ceiling Rack Fit?
Check whether a ceiling storage rack fits above your vehicle without hitting the garage door, tracks or opener.
Ceiling racks free a lot of floor space, but they must clear your tallest vehicle and the garage door’s travel path. Enter your ceiling height, the rack’s drop, the height of the open door and your vehicle, and the calculator checks the clearances.
When this tool helps most
Use it before buying a rack, and again before choosing the drop setting during installation.
How to use this tool
- Measure from the floor to the ceiling joists.
- Enter the rack’s drop including the height of bins you will store on it.
- Open the door and measure to the lowest point of the raised door, rail or opener.
- Enter your tallest vehicle height and the clearance you want, then read the result.
Worked example
With a 108-inch ceiling and a 30-inch drop, the rack bottom sits at 78 inches, leaving 6 inches above a 72-inch vehicle, which matches the clearance you asked for. But the raised door reaches down to 90 inches, so the rack would conflict with the door path: place it outside the door’s travel area, beside or behind it.
Understanding your results
The tool reports the rack’s bottom height, space above your vehicle, whether it clears the door path, and the maximum drop for your clearance.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Measuring with the door closed.
- Forgetting roof racks or cargo boxes on the vehicle.
- Blocking the opener’s emergency release cord.
- Fastening racks to drywall instead of joists or trusses.
How to get the most accurate result
- Measure your own garage with a tape measure instead of using typical sizes.
- Use the numbers printed on your product labels, manuals and data sheets.
- Change one input at a time to see which assumption matters most.
- Print or save the result and bring it to your installer or contractor.

Frequently asked questions
Keep enough space that the vehicle never touches the rack even with a roof rack or when the suspension rebounds. Many people keep several inches. Only if the rack sits above the raised door, tracks and opener rail. Most racks go beside or behind the door’s travel area. Use the maker’s rating and fasten it into joists or trusses as instructed.
