Garage Parking Fit Checker: Will My Car Fit?

Check whether your vehicles fit your garage with room to open doors and walk around.

Vehicles keep getting wider, and many garages were built for smaller cars. Enter your garage’s inside dimensions, the door opening and your vehicles’ sizes, and the checker shows the space around each vehicle.

When this tool helps most

Use it before buying a new vehicle, adding shelving along the walls, or planning a workshop in part of the garage.

How to use this tool

  1. Measure the garage’s inside width and depth at the narrowest points.
  2. Enter the door opening width.
  3. Enter the number of vehicles and each vehicle’s width with mirrors and length.
  4. Set the space you want beside each door, then read the verdict.

Worked example

A 240 by 240 inch garage with two 82-inch-wide, 196-inch-long vehicles leaves 25 inches beside and between them, which is tight for opening doors, and 44 inches in front or behind. Through a 192-inch door each vehicle has about 9 inches of clearance on each side.

Understanding your results

Use the side space to decide whether doors can open, and the depth space to decide how deep shelving or a workbench along the back wall can be.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Measuring at the widest point and forgetting steps, posts or the water heater.
  • Using the vehicle width without mirrors.
  • Filling the back wall with deep shelving that pushes the car into the door path.
  • Forgetting that a garage door opening is narrower than the garage.

How to get the most accurate result

  • Measure your own garage with a tape measure instead of using typical sizes.
  • Use the numbers printed on your product labels, manuals and data sheets.
  • Change one input at a time to see which assumption matters most.
  • Print or save the result and bring it to your installer or contractor.
